Californian Bungalow Renovations Come To Wembley

Californian Bungalow Renovation by Nexus Homes Group

When you think of bungalow renovations, nostalgic visions of stylish sloping roofs, unenclosed rafters, deep shady verandahs, and rustic external timber springs to mind.

As reported by Modern Heritage Matters, this unique style of character property was one of the most popular styles of Australian housing throughout the twentieth century (specifically between the 1920s and 1930s).

So, when our Nexus team were presented with a brief for a Californian bungalow renovation, we couldn’t wait to get started!

Below is an overview of this bungalow renovation which helped transform this dilapidated property into a modern, contemporary home, whilst maintaining its original style and character.

The Bungalow Design Brief:

The Wembley homeowners were keen to reinvigorate the property into a vibrant, modern home, whilst staying true to the unique Californian bungalow styling.

We were given a brief to complete both a ground floor addition and internal/external renovation to which began with removing the previous extensions, before restoration of the front of the bungalow itself.

From here we were asked to introduce warmth into the property through the use of windows and natural light, whilst also taking advantage of open-plan living to maximise the use of space within the home.

The Challenge:

Our first job was to remove all of the 70s, 80 and 90s renovation and extensions before introducing new materials that would add contemporary styling throughout the dated property, whilst also creating a homely feel.

Working with such a unique character style property also presented challenges to ensure the new materials blended seamlessly with some of the original styling of the bungalow.

Our designs also needed to fit in with the available space within the property, so careful consideration and planning were implemented to ensure the flow and layout would be in line with how the homeowners planned to use the space.

Choosing the right materials became an important part of the renovation to ensure the look and feel matched with the functionality of the home, whilst keeping true to its historical design style.

The Bungalow Renovations End Result:

Our team of designers and home renovations experts introduced a series of contemporary materials, architectural styling and high-end finishes throughout this Californian bungalow.

This included natural timber cladding and cabinetry throughout the property, as well as premium burnished concrete flooring through the interior. We also introduced a North facing raking ceiling and windows to make the most of the natural flow of light throughout the property.

We also ensured our design made use of the home’s orientation to ensure a smooth, natural flow from the indoor area, kitchen and scullery through to the renovated outdoor area, complete with new decking and landscaping.

Aside from the top-end polished concrete floors which really introduced a modern new look to the property, one of the stand out features of this bungalow renovation was the Lunawood cedar cladding around the exterior of the property which really held true to the unique styling of this original character home.
